Two thatched sod huts, a man with a horse, washing strung on a line in the foreground and a sheep's carcass hanging on the left. Foothills and snow-clad mountains beyond. Samuel Butler took up his station at Mesopotamia in 1860, leaving it in 1864, after doubling his money. William Packe, with his brother George, took up the neighbouring station Raincliff in 1868.
