No 98, a G class steam locomotive originally built by Beyer Peacock (Manchester, England), type 4-6-2 + 2-6-4, which was in service from June 1929 to September 1937. One of 3 imported, this type of locomotive was the first and only one in New Zealand to have a mechanical stoker, and also the first to employ power reversing, exhaust-steam injection, and grease-lubricating driving axle-boxes.
