French writer and artist, who travelled with Captain Louis de Freycinet aboard the Uranie, with visits to Oceania between 1817 and 1820, including five weeks in Sydney, November-December 1819. He was born 6 March 1790 at Estragel, Pyrenees-Orientales, in Catalan France, the younger brother of Francois Jean Dominique Arago, Prime Minister of France in 1848.
