An aerial view of Somes Island showing buildings and some trees. Somes Island is an island in the Wellington Harbour (Port Nicholson), Wellington, 3km south from the Petone foreshore and 3km west of Lowry Bay. It has a lighthouse and maximum security animal quarantine station. It was named in 1840 by the crew of the NZ Company's ship Tory, after the deputy-governor of the NZ Company, Joseph Somes, who was also founder of the shipbuilding firm which had built the Tory.
