Boardside view of the aircraft carrier, USS America, at sea during a visit to New Zealand. Photographs taken November 1968 by Morrie Hill. Originally ordered as an Enterprise-class nuclear carrier. Rising costs caused the ship to be reordered as a conventionally powered Kitty Hawk-class carrier. Construction began on 1 January 1961 at Newport News, Virginia by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Corp. Launched 1 February 1964
