Small pakeha encampment beside lake. In his text to Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand, Brees notes:"This View is taken from the western side of the Valley, looking towards the sea, and represents the spot where the author bivouacked on the 8th of February, 1843, when on an exploring expedition with Mr Edward Chedham and Mr Barton; the native chief A Kuri and a party of white men and natives..."
