Description

Head of Te Pehi Kupe, paramount chief of the Ngati Toa tribe, copied from the engraving in The New Zealanders by G. L. Craik (1830) in its turn taken from a watercolour by John Sylvester Te Pehi Kupe visited England in 1826 and was painted in Liverpool by artist John Sylvester. The resulting watercolour is in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia (ref T3172, NK1277).
