Description

Analyses references to Māori cannibalism in the correspondence of French Marist missionaries working in NZ from 1838. Finds the practice was considered a cultural behaviour of minor interest. Uncovers some evidence of ritual cannibalism and offers conclusions about mass battlefield cannibalism and the eating of people for food.
