Description

Taheretikitiki, the waka taua (war canoe) of Paora Tūhaere on the beach at Ōkahu Bay, Ōrākei, with Mount Victoria in the background. The decorative white feathers have been painted onto the negative in the darkroom. Taheretikitiki was built and carved on the Kaipara Harbour by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei in about 1882. Before his death in 1892, Paora Tūhaere presented Taheretikitiki to King Tāwhiao.
