Description

Showing a class of Maori pupils from the Te Wairoa Mission Station school, posed with their books. Taken during the Government Scientific Exploring Expedition, conducted by Dr. Ferdinand Hochstetter in 1859. Destroyed by the eruption of Mount Tarawera on 10 June,1886, Te Wairoa later became known as The Buried Village.
