Showing a studio portrait of the geologist and writer, Doctor Ferdinand von Hochstetter [1829 - 1884], one of the first to describe and interpret many features of New Zealand geology. Born on 30th April 1829 in Esslingen, Wurttemburg, Germany, in 1857, Hochstetter was appointed geologist to the scientific expedition of the Austrian naval frigate 'Novara', whose aim was to circumnavigate the globe, carrying eight scientists and assistants to undertake research.
