Description

One of the greatest disasters in British military history was the fall of Singapore on February 16 1942, when 60,000 British, Indian and Australian troops surrendered. Upper left: British officers at Singapore on their way to meet the Japanese to discuss surrender terms. On the extreme right is Lieutenant-General A. E. Percival commanding the British and Empire troops. Upper right: a Chinese mother wails over the dead body of her child in a Singapore street after a Japanese air raid
