Hand-coloured formal portrait of Edward and Eliza Mary Balcombe-Brown. The back of the photograph has been annotated by the donor: "Mr & Mrs Edward Brown[sic]. Mrs Brown lived alone in Cruickshank Rd as a widow for 35 years. Edward Brown (a lawyer) [based in Wellington] died in 1919. [Their] two sons, Wilfred & Rainsford were killed in World War I.". In her widowhood Mrs Balcombe-Brown was active in a number of Upper Hutt community organizations, such as the Plunket Society
