Caption: Birchville and Maoribank Schools were host to 23 Japanese teachers recently, observing New Zealand teaching methods. Here Birchville pupils Michelle Voisey, standard 2, Shintaro Yamaji (centre) and Mamoru Terada study a book called Japan Today. Japanese teaching is more formal than its New Zealand counterpart and at Birchville School the teachers were able to observe teaching in an open plan style while Maoribank School has a bilingual unit and kohanga reo.
