Description

Miranui Flaxmill was owned by A & L Seifert Flaxmilling Company Ltd and opened in 1907. This view of the scutching shed shows five wooden presses which were used to bale the finished flax fibre. On the far right is a pile of hanks which have been scutched and is ready for baling. In the centre can be seen two finished bales of hemp ready for railing to Wellington. By the time this photograph was taken presses had been converted to electricity which resulted in a compact bale of uniform size.
