Description

This photograph shows Thames Street, the main street of Oamaru around 1884, when the town was at its most prosperous. This prosperity can be seen in the row of large ornately pillared buildings from left to right: the Bank of New South Wales; the Bank of New Zealand; the Empire Hotel. All of these buildings were built in Oamaru stone and still stand today.
