Description

Moeraki Boulders/Te Kai Hinaki can be found along the coast around the seaside community of Moeraki. Geologists tell us they are natural concretions of mudstone that have formed around pebbles or small fossils. In Ngāi Tahu legend the boulders are described as food baskets and gourd water containers from the great canoe Arai Te Uru that foundered in a storm near Matakaea/Shag Point.
