Dental Clinic Building, Willis Street, Wellington
A DigitalNZ Story by Kaye
The site of the former Wellington Dental Clinic was once that of the Te Aro School. The school building, erected in 1880, was demolished in 1933 and the school moved to the site of the old Terrace Gaol. Government Architect J. T. Mair designed the Dominion Training School for Dental Nurses in 1937 and construction began the following year. The building was opened in 1940 by the Governor General's wife Lady Galway. Speakers at the opening ceremony included the Prime Minister Michael Savage and it was the proud hope of the government that, by 1941, with the trainees provided by the new facility, every child under 12 would be treated by the School Dental Service. In 2004 the building was redesigned as Augusta Apartments. More details on the building can be found here http://wellington.govt.nz/services/heritage/details.php?id=314&m=search&street=Willis
