Sockburn train smash - Harriers Halswell - Paterson Cup - c1934. Invercargill to Christchurch express was rear ended by a passenger train at Sockburn on the night of Sat 2 June 1934. No passengers in either train were seriously injured. A departmental enquiry found signal and lack of observation to blame.
