From 1967, when it replaced the sixpence, until 2006, when it was taken out of circulation, the five-cent coin featured a tuatara on a rocky shore with a gull in the background. The five-cent piece was scrapped because inflation had diminished it to about half a cent in terms of its 1967 value – it was effectively worthless in 2006.
