Mt John Observatory overlooks Lake Tekapo. It was originally set up in the 1960s in joint partnership between the universities of Pennsylvania and Canterbury. The Americans were looking to establish a southern hemisphere station from which they could view parts of the southern sky that were hidden from their view in the northern hemisphere. Since 1975 the observatory has been operated solely by the University of Canterbury’s department of physics and astronomy.
