This diagram shows a possible solution to one of the major disadvantages of coal – the fact that it cannot be burnt without producing carbon dioxide, a major cause of global warming. The plan is to channel the carbon dioxide into deep-water reservoirs or used oil and gas chambers. This has been suggested as a use for the Māui gas field once it is dry.
