In the heyday of the welfare state, New Zealanders received medical care at little or no cost. A school dental service also helped to look after the teeth of all New Zealand children. More recently, dental health vans have been provided to ensure children in rural areas receive dental care. These children from a school in Ōtara, Auckland, wait their turn outside the van. Adults, however, have always had to pay to visit the dentist.
