Description

This painting depicts the demise of the French explorer Marc Joseph Marion du Fresne’s at Manawaora Bay, Northland in 1772. Artists in Europe often indulged in romantic interpretations of the South Seas. The columns of the storehouse at right are more Roman than Māori.
