In the 1990s and early 2000s there was a boom in the number of young Japanese coming to New Zealand to study. Many stayed with Kiwi families and attended regular schools or English language academies. Pictured here in 2004 is Marie Ishihara, a Japanese student at Dunedin’s Bayfield High School. She arrived in 2002 with her father and, because she liked Dunedin and the school environment, decided to stay on after he returned to Japan. She planned to continue her studies at Otago University.
