Description

Dancers wait their turn to compete at the Waipū Highland Games in Northland in 1996. One of the oldest forms of folk dance, Scottish Highland dancing was traditionally performed by men and was seen as a test of stamina and agility. After 1900 women became involved and now dominate competitions. The traditional dress for women dancers is a velvet jacket trimmed with gold or silver braid and buttons, a white shirt with lace ruffles, a kilt, and tartan hose.
