Many Scottish immigrants came to New Zealand hoping to acquire land. The McLean brothers from the Island of Coll did so on a grand scale. Allan McLean’s estate, Waikākahi, in South Canterbury, was bought by the government in the 1890s and subdivided into more than 130 farms. Many of the Waikākahi settlers of the 1890s were also Scots. In 1999 their descendants gathered at Allan McLean’s old homestead to mark the centenary of the subdivision.
