In 1895 21-year-old Kazuyuki Kiyohei Tsukigawa, a seaman from near Nagasaki, Japan, jumped ship in Dunedin after an argument with the captain. By 1904 he was a deckhand on the Clyde, which plied the Clutha River. He was to captain the Cluthafrom its commissioning in 1908 until the end of its service in 1939, and is seen here (right front) with crew members. ‘KK’, as he was known, was naturalised as a New Zealander in 1907.
