Women lead a protest march up Auckland’s Queen Street during the divisive 1951 waterfront dispute. Placards advertise a meeting at the Domain where the workers’ side of the stoppage is to be aired. Shortly after this picture was taken police launched an unprovoked attack on the marchers, 14 of whom were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The incident became known as ‘Bloody Friday’.
