Auckland biotechnology chemist Margaret Brimble and PhD student Jack Chen conduct an experiment in her laboratory. Brimble won a major international award for her work in 2007. She headed a gender-balanced team studying products that occur naturally, such as shellfish toxins, and copying or modifying them to use their beneficial properties. Keen to encourage more women to take scientific careers, she also wanted to use some of the award money to promote science among primary schoolchildren.
