On 29 November 1912 a ball in honour of the police was held by Waihī citizens; it was reported to be ‘most sucessful’. This ticket, sold in advance of the occasion, advertised the date as 15 November. The ball may have been deferred because of the consequences of 'Black Tuesday', 12 November. That day police and strikebreakers stormed the miners' hall, and in the fracas one of the strikers, Frederick Evans, was batoned so severely that he later died in hospital.
