Immunisation by vaccination against infectious diseases has been a key public health initiative since the early 20th century. This laboratory technician at the National Health Institute in Wellington is operating the filling and sealing machine for the freeze-dried smallpox vaccine in 1970. Scientists certified that smallpox had been eradicated in 1979, and it now only exists in laboratory storage.
