An 1840s propaganda poster comparing starvation in England with abundance in New Zealand was designed to encourage people to emigrate. Its depiction of the relative prosperity in New Zealand was generally fair – the colony had a high per-capita gross domestic product, and settler families could enjoy a high standard of living.
