Description

Aquaculture, particularly the cultivation of mussels and salmon, has thrived in the Marlborough Sounds since the 1970s. The 1.5-hectare Te Pangu salmon farm in Tory Channel, owned and operated by King Salmon, produced around 2,000 tonnes of salmon (worth $28 million) annually in the early 2000s. A centralised feeding system was installed at Te Pangu in 2008 to increase the efficiency of the operation. About 75% of New Zealand’s king salmon is produced in the Marlborough Sounds.
