The 1982, 35-cent Christmas stamp featured Rangiātea Māori church at Ōtaki. Christmas stamps were first issued in 1960, and until 1970 there was only one Christmas stamp each year. Since then Christmas issues have featured between three and eight stamps. Māori motifs and imagery have been a staple of New Zealand stamp design, often appearing in pictorials and the decorative borders, yet it was only in the 1970s that a definitive set focusing on Māori culture was issued.
