On 25 July 1916 the Wellington daily newspaper the Evening Post published this report of a public meeting held by the New Zealand Labour Party, which had been formed earlier that month. One of the speakers at the meeting, James McCombs, was the party's founding president. At the time he was the MP for Lyttelton, representing the Social Democratic Party.
