This photograph shows the release of a weather balloon, at Tarawa, Kiribati, in 2007. The balloon was used for upper-air observations as part of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). New Zealand is involved with a number of projects supporting meteorological and climate observation work in the south-west Pacific.
