Following the burning of Kororāreka (Russell), a force of British soldiers and seamen led by Lieutenant-Colonel William Hulme arrived in the Bay of Islands. Its first action was this attack on Ōtuihu, the pā of the neutral Ngāpuhi rangatira Pōmare II.
