This clip features Pelorus Jack, a much loved Risso’s dolphin famous for escorting boats between Pelorus Sound and French Pass. Travelling back and forth for more than two decades, ‘Jack’ became a popular tourist attraction. People came from all over the world to catch a glimpse of him. The dolphin featured in many publications, including on the cover of the Christmas issue of the 1910 London News. In 1911, James Cowan wrote a book about the ‘famous fish’.
