This sash was presented to Miss New Zealand, Lorraine Downes, at the 1983 Miss Universe pagaent in 1983 in St. Louis, Missouri. When performing her Miss Universe duties Lorraine Downes was required to wear her sash at all times as a ready means of identification. According to the Official Miss Universe Handbook the sash added ‘magnetism and charisma’ to Miss Universe’s total presentation.
