Description

This embroidery celebrates the 6 week visit of Queen Elizabeth II to New Zealand at the end of 1953. It was made by Ida Downard (1913-2006) who was a keen embroiderer with an interest in British royalty. The wreath in the centre includes the national floral emblems from British Isles – roses from England, thistles from Scotland, and shamrocks from Eire – and kowhai (native shrub: Sophora) from New Zealand.
