Richard Burgess, Thomas Kelly, and Philip Levy of the Burgess gang were hanged on October 5 1866 in Nelson for five murders committed in June 1866 on the Maungatapu Track. One of the gang, Joseph Sullivan, gave evidence against the other three, thereby securing a pardon. Their crime spree began in May with robberies and the murder of George Dob...
