Description

Investigates the great importance of tapua (whale ivory) in the pre-Christian period in Tonga. Argues that the tapua is ancestral of the Fijian tabua. Links the funerary role of tapua to that of tabua in Fijian chiefly burials. Reviews the export of tapua from Tonga to Fiji. Explores tapua's role as a godly embodiment and relates it to evidence suggesting certain pule cowries formed a female counterpart.
