Armistice Celebrations WWI in Queen Street, Waimate, 12 November 1918. The ringing of the bells of the local Post Office announced the eagerly awaited news that Germany had signed the Armistice on the terms imposed by the Allies. No sooner had the Post Office flag been hoisted than a crowd began to gather on the main street. Strings of flags and bunting were hoisted along shop fronts and atop office buildings.
