Description

Silk and lace cloth souvenir from World War One, 'Souvenir d'Ypres, Les Halles' showing the Cloth Hall at Ypres (Les Halles), sent to his family in Masterton by Ebenezer Brown while he was serving on the Western Front. Les Halles (the Cloth Hall), a medieval building, was bombarded by the German Army from late 1914 and by 1917 virtually the entire building was in ruins. Belgian women, refuges from German-occupied Belgium, made souvenirs in silk and lace to sell to Allied troops.
