Murray Halberg wins the gold medal in the 5,000 metres at the Rome Olympics in 1960. Halberg had a paralysed left arm from a rugby injury he received when he was 17 years old. He went on to become one of New Zealand's greatest athletes, winning Olympic and Empire Games gold medals and setting several world records. In 1963 Halberg set up the Murray Halberg Trust for Crippled Children (now the Halberg Foundation), dedicated to enabling children with disabilities to reach their sporting potential.
