Neroli Fairhall is shown here with fellow members of the New Zealand team at the opening ceremony of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Fairhall made history as the first paraplegic athlete to compete at an Olympic Games. She became a paraplegic after a motorbike accident at the age of 24. She won a gold medal for archery at the 1980 Arnhem Paralympics and defeated a field of able-bodied athletes at the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games.
