Description

Aucklander Bruce McLaren began racing in hill climbs at age 14, and in 1958 was selected to drive for the British-based Cooper team. He was 22 when he took part in the 1959 Grand Prix at Ardmore aerodrome, and is shown here covering his Cooper with overalls to protect it from rain. He came third in the race after Stirling Moss and Jack Brabham, but won the United States Grand Prix later that year, the youngest-ever winner at that time.
