Ngāpare Hopa (Tainui, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) appears at left in this 1968 photo at the Young Māori Woman of the Year contest, part of that year's Māori Women's Welfare League conference. Letty Brown (centre) was the winner, and Hopa and Ramona Lee (right) were the place-getters. Hopa symbolised a new generation of urban and university-educated Māori. She studied at the University of Auckland and later became the first Māori woman to gain a PhD from Oxford University, with a doctoral thesis on urba...
