Description

Bruce Biggs (Ngāti Maniapoto) learned Māori as a second language while teaching at rural primary schools in the far north and on the East Coast. In 1951 he joined the staff of the University of Auckland as New Zealand's first lecturer in Māori language. In 1958 Biggs co-founded the Linguistic Society of New Zealand, and he later served as president of the Polynesian Society. He is seen here speaking at a welcome ceremony outside Auckland University's Human Sciences Building in the 1980s.
